Effective communication can be hard. It’s even harder in a foreign country. Luckily, you don’t need to be fluent to get around. Knowing just a few words will go a long way.
All you really need to know is hello, yes, no, please, and thank you. The more you practice saying them with a native accent, the better. People appreciate it when you make an attempt to use their language. Greet people in their language. Say hello. Show off your skills, even if they’re terrible. Sure, someone might laugh at you, but that will get them smiling.
Also, don't be afraid to utilize Google Translate or iTranslate if you need to communicate in detail. These type of applications can translate different languages using only voice and are very easy to use.
Most importantly, have an understanding of context and body language. Sometimes non-verbal communication will say more than verbal could. No matter what form of communication takes place, having kindness and patience will always be the most effective.
